UNC-Wilmington Outlasts Carolina in Defensive BattleSaturday, February 21st, 2015
Carolina 10, UNC Wilmington 19
Chapel Hill, NC — CHAPEL HILL, NC—The Tar Heels fell to UNCW, 19-10, after a defensive struggle Saturday afternoon. The two teams battled to a 7-7 halftime stalemate before the Seahawks scored two second half tries to win the game.
Carolina opened the game by marching down the field, only to be stopped short of the try-zone by a strong UNCW defense. However, the Heels would strike first when senior flyhalf Dylan Cunningham scored from 10 meters out. Cunningham would nail the kick to make the score 7-0. However, UNCW recovered the ensuing kickoff and, after a lengthy defensive stand on the Carolina try-line, was able to punch in the equalizer. The two teams took the 7-7 draw into halftime.
In the second half, the Heels took the lead with Cunningham’s penalty kick ten minutes in. However, the Heels were unable to keep their lead, as UNCW rallied to retake the lead with a short try from their forward pack. Carolina’s last chance to rally came in the final ten minutes, but after another extended defensive stand on the try-line, the Seahawks were able to ice the game with one more try.
Carolina will host Appalachian State this Saturday, Feb. 28th in the last home game of the spring for the Heels.
